Education

In 1986 Jean Clery, a 19 year old Lehigh University freshman, was raped and murdered in her campus residence hall in the United States. This event provided the impetus for The Clery Act which requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses.

This along with the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001, the pandemic outbreak planning of 2006, the shooting events on Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University campuses have changed the face of campus security and student protection.

 

Challenge

Common issues associated with educational facilities, which are often multi-site, include vandalism and disruptive behaviour, incursion from unwanted visitors and managing access levels. Not only are the typical security measures of surveillance and access control necessary for the protection of the student population, but also broad area real-time notification to student and faculty of an immediate danger is required. Special types of access controls for Student Housing and Special Events are common. Student ID's that also serve as access control credentials. Data integration with student databases and use of mobile card readers at school events have also become commonplace.

Solution

Integrated Access Control and Video Surveillance

Tyco Security Access Control and Video products provide complete integrated solutions for synchronizing Alarm Monitoring and Video surveillance. Using mobile alarm monitoring stations, officers can respond while viewing real-time video of an emergency situation. Our Access Control systems can lock down campus and only allow entry by LEO personnel in a crisis. Alarm messages can be broadcast over multiple annunciation technologies such as text messages, graphic displays, reverse 911 systems and even over existing fire alarm voice annunciation panels. Any unauthorized access attempts or movements in predefined fields of view will trigger an alarm that will be captured by cameras and then recorded onto the Digital Video Management System.

Even non-door devices such as podiums with electronic equipment inside, can be controlled by cards to restrict access and protect assets. Our "Double Swipe" technology allows faculty members to unlock and disarm classrooms on command without keypads or alarm panels.

Using Student ID credentials to access campus Events

Using our wireless mobile card reading solution, student and faculty ID's can be checked for authorized entry to sporting and other events at mobile locations. The card record database can be automatically updated by the master Campus Student/Facility databases.
